The ultimate guide for buying water ionizers

What is a Water Ionizer?

A water ionizer or alkaline ionizer is an electronic water purification unit that increases the pH of water to make it more alkaline. Many have electrified plates within the system that have the water flow over the plates and changes the ion charge. This is known to kill many contaminates and organisms that reside in some water supplies. Also most water ionizers will have adjustable pH levels to adjust the water pH, to bring it lower to acidic levels or take it higher to alkaline levels.

What is ionized water?

Regular purified water is assumed to be neutral or have pH 7. Ionized water on the other hand, will be of two types, acidic (pH less than 7) or alkaline (pH greater than 7). It is this alkaline water that has raised public interest in water ionizers and has made it the talk of the town.

pH Scale

Why is everyone talking about Water Ionizers and alkaline water?

A water ionizer increases the pH of the water to make it alkaline. Drinking alkaline water has loads of benefits for our body, and this has caught the attention of fitness enthusiasts. It is expected to be the next big innovation in water purification technology.

When the water becomes alkaline, it makes the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) of the water more negative. Water with lower values of ORP is said to be better for us, as it prevents the harmful oxidation from happening in our bodies. The best alkaline water machines give the lowest ORP values. Like we are encouraged to have antioxidant foods, antioxidant water is healthier for us.

So what are the benefits of alkaline water?

1. Increases Hydration

Water Ionizers have intelligent ionization process which reduce the size of water molecule by two-thirds and renders it hexagonal. The smaller clusters thus formed can easily hydrate body cells, enhancing waste removal and absorption of essential minerals like Sodium, potassium, calcium and Magnesium.

2. Balance Body PH

Ionized water increases tap water pH by ionizing or splitting the water molecule (H2O) or simply making it more alkaline, resulting in formation of H+ ions (hydrogen with a positive electric charge) and OH- ions (hydroxyl with a negative electrical charge ), as well as alkaline minerals.

 3. Increases Blood Oxygenation

Alkaline water is rich in hydroxyl ions (OH-) which donate free electrons to unstable oxygen free radicals; this results in stable oxygen molecules. Experts opine that drinking ionized water will increase the amount of oxygen in blood.

4. Neutralizes Harmful Free Radicals

Ionized water provides extra electrons that neutralize the destructive free radicals circulating in our body.

5. Increases Antioxidants

Ionized water has a high negative ORP (oxidation reduction potential ). This property of ionized water, consequently makes the body cells rich in antioxidants.

Points to Consider while buying a Water Ionizer

Water Ionizer

1. The pH Range:

The main distinction between the different water ionizers is the degree to which they change the pH or ORP of water. Lets deal with pH first.

As described earlier, the pH scale decides how acidic or how alkaline the water is. pH ranges from 1 to 14. The lower the pH (1 – 7) the more acidic the water is. The higher the pH (7 – 14), the more alkaline the water is. 7 is for neutral water.

Each band of water has a special use. Lower pH water, or acidic water is really effective for cleaning and disinfecting. It can be used to clean your floors and bathrooms very effectively. Mild alkaline water is great for drinking and water with higher pH is good for cooking.

So while all machines produce alkaline drinking water, not all machines produce the entire range of pH water.

2.  ORP Value (Oxidation Reduction Potential Value)

Look for a machine that offers low ORP value. The lower the ORP of water, better is the ability to reduce harmful oxidation in the body. Again, though all water ionizers provide water with ideal pH for drinking, not all of them have the ability to change the ORP Value.

3. Number of Plates, Size and coating of plates

The plates are the key components in a water ionizer and assist in the electrolysis of water. A crucial point to check while choosing a water Ionizer is the size of the plates and coating of the plates.

Material of the plates should be given due importance as material like steel, copper are highly corrosive and reduce the life of the machine and thus are a potential health hazard. Titanium is the most preferred material for water ionizers.

4. Counter Top/ Under Counter System:

Under Counter systems is the new buzz word in water purifiers – where the unit will be placed in cupboard below your counter and hidden from public view, making your kitchen look chic and jazzy. The purifier is then connected to a faucet on the counter.

Water Ionizers also come in both forms, though being a new technology, there are more over the counter products that are currently available.
